JR often wonders to what exactly is the point of his job.
Direction/management from the top down is poor.
It's the same people with the same problems.
The courts are often making his work useless by letting offenders off with light or no sentences at all.
It's a vicious cycle.
Finding a reason or a sense of direction of the midst of this can be difficult. When JR feels directionless it often leads to a sense of ambiguity for us as a couple and as a family.
My biggest prayer is for him to be content at his job with much purpose, drive and direction.
Sometimes purpose has simply been found in the sense of perhaps we are here for just one person. To show up and make a difference in one person's life makes this posting worth something.
JR climbed into bed at 0245 this morning and shared that he was able to help someone to night...the woman said that if he hadn't tracked her down looking for her car on the road last night she would have killed herself. Following up on a friend's concerns for her, JR was able to be apart of saving a woman's life last night.
Now that is purpose.

Sheep among wolves
I was grasping at straws.
JR was unraveling in front of me on his supper break at 2130hrs.
There was nothing I could say and what I tried fell flat.
He left and I crawled into bed to pray. I opened my Bible. We needed words full of truth to cut through the chaff. I continued on my reading Matthew and the the Lord answered my heart.
Reading of the Disciples being sent out...
"Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. Be as wary as snacks and harmless as doves." Matthew 10:16
The rest of the verses read on to say what the disciples would face and it wasn't a pretty picture.
There is no easy road to eternity. As a Christian what we experience here on earth though is the worst it will ever get.
JR is a sheep among wolves right now. I have to trust that the Lord, his shepherd will lead and guide, protect and encourage.
Praying for encouragement today...

On Days Off
Lying in a hotel room bed by myself, I should be enjoying the time to sleep in but have been awake since 5am. After two years of very interrupted nights I have difficulty sleeping a solid set of hours.
I kidnapped JR for a night in the middle of a stretch of Days On. I needed some time with him. He was pleasantly surprised by the gesture and enjoyed supper out and a relaxing evening at the delightful little hotel in town.
JJ and Tiny Bear are just a short drive away at home with a sitter.
JR is out on an early morning call. I knew this was a good possibility which is why we didn't go further from home. Hopefully he makes it back so we can still enjoy breakfast together.
In the meantime I have no place to be, no diapers to change and no one asking anything of me.
3 more hours til duty calls and my 16 hours off is done.

Regimental Funeral
It was haunting.
The click of hundreds of dress boots on the auditorium floor...
The bag pipes...
The prayers of tradition...
The familiar hymns...
Her sobs as the Commissioner handed her our country's flag...
Her husband in that casket...
Haunting.

Loss
It is surprising how much you can hurt for someone you don't really even know.
Probably because it could have been my husband just as it tragically was hers.
Police vehicle vs moose while en route to a call. Another risk of the rural job.
A tragic loss for the force.
An unspeakable grief for a young widow and three children he left behind.
JR will march in full dress uniform along with his colleagues in a salute of honor to a fallen member.
I'll be there too because I'd hope that someday if I was in the same spot some officers wife I didn't even know would show up just because they cared enough to come.
We are family.
Bound by a uniform pledge to support those who serve and protect.

Getting ready for a call out before his shift...
Good thing you ate supper
JR - I'll be back in a bit
Hey, there is a PC going around back. Is someone coming to pick you up?
JR - Yes.
Where is your gun? Is it at the office?
JR - Yes.
Are you going to pick it up? Is your vest there too?
JR - Just a call with some 60 year-old drunk guys
Well I don't like you going out to a call without your gun and your vest. Go get your gun and your vest.
JR - K (*a very non-commital "k")
That's stupid. Don't be stupid.
JR walked out the door. JJ, Tiny Bear and I watched from our living room window as he jumped in the waiting truck and drove away.
Elapsed Time: approx. 1 hour and 28 minutes
ring ring
*Call Display: Office Number
Hello?
JR - Yah, everything's fine. Don't worry, I picked up my gun and my vest before we went to the call.
Well I updated our family emergency binder because I was pretty sure you were going to die.
JR - *insert chuckles* Okay. Well I'll call you later.
At least he takes my advice....

Sunday Confessional
The watched the first episode from the treadmill, the second finished with a bowl of popcorn and the third started with some Heavenly Hash.
I completely understand that number 2 & 3 cancel out number 1.
JR left on course today. I'm catching up on old episodes of Grey's Anatomy.
I don't watch a lot of tv anymore for many many reasons, but I've been justifying watching an episode while I do intervals on the treadmill.
Even when things were bad between us, like really bad, really really really bad, really....ah, you get the point...I always felt blue when he was away.
It's an even deeper absence felt since things have been so much richer.
Blue doesn't even touch how I feel tonight.
I'm grateful.
It speaks to a reconciling love between us.
...but it does mean that I'm on my fourth episode of Grey's Anatomy for tonight.
However, it didn't start with food.
Small victories. ;)

Officer & Home Safety
It was a court day. Fairly uneventful and always frustrating.
JR usually watches as repeat offenders are let off on light sentences or no sentences at all.
Hours of work don't go anywhere.
You can empathize how it is a self-defeating process. Most days JR's job looks a little pointless.
One young offender, and a repeater at that was released into the 'custody' of family....
...our next door neighbors.
The finish to the day some how brought about a chain of events that landed JR transporting 6 (SIX!!!!!) prisoners BY HIMSELF!!
Officer Safety at its finest.
Next time he will refuse.

Full bellies, full hearts...
John Rambo is off today.
He baked pies.
I made a delicious Oreo Cream Cheese Chocolate Dessert. Its like a little dream in a pan.
The house smells amazing.

Surprises
John Rambo brought me 18 red roses yesterday.
He was thoughtful enough to get them from the grocery store and bought them on the cheap.
With a beautifully eloquent card, to a wife, for Mother's Day.
I asked if he actually read the card.
Yes, he had.
Just checking.
Scribbled inside in penmanship I rarely see anymore...
"You are the spice that makes life worth living."
It was just what I needed to read.
We've come a long way.
He gets me.

JR is pushing bush with some other guys on his day off. I'm not sure what they are hoping to find but it is probably something to bring home as a conquest from the day.
You know, make them feel like hunters.
Make them feel like men.
JJ is playing with a bucket full of assorted types of dry beans. Right now she is sitting in the bucket saying, "Merry Christmas, Dad." I'm not sure what exactly she is pretending.
Tiny Bear woke up early from her nap and is cuddling with me as I type from my iPhone.
I am ignoring the disaster in the laundry room.

In between the shifts...
JR took 3 days off in the middle of his shift to solo parent while I was gallivanting the country.
Hands. Down. Best. Dad. Ever.
I even came home to a clean kitchen.
The best part would be that Tiny Bear seems a lot more comfortable with JR now. It is nice to see there relationship grow.
There has been lots going on this past week and I'm planning on getting pictures up of my trip to New Orleans soon. It was a crazy experience.
We are in-between shifts as JR is on Days Off.
I wish it could last forever. I love having him around.

Conversations
While on a supper break at 22:00hrs, Jr stopped by to grab a nibble.
JR - Look at my pants.
Mrs. R - What about them?
JR - See the scuff marks? (He points toward the front of his shins)
Mrs. R - Yah? (Kinda shrugs in a nonchalante kinda way. What is so special about dirt on your pants)
JR - I got in a fight.
Mrs. R - Really? (interest peaked)
JR - Yah, taking a guy down who was resisting arrest.
Mrs. R - And I take it you won?
JR - Yah.
Mrs. R - That's what I like to hear!

Overheard
While getting ready to leave for Easter weekend, JJ not only broke into the nail polish and painted her own toenails, but she also painted her tongue.
I heard JR instructing her...
"oh no. K, JJ, put this water in your mouth and go "bogaroshaburga" (shakes head around) and spit out the water. Quick."
She did a very meticulous job on her toenails. I was proud.
The tongue?
Well, what doesn't kill ya makes ya stronger, right?
Right.

Shifts
JR works 8s.
There is no rhythm to his schedule.
There are 7 different times he could be starting his shifts.
Days: 08:00/10:00
Evenings: 13:00/16:00
Nights: 18:00/19:00/20:00
Sometimes he works 4 days in a row, sometimes 7, sometimes more. His days off are not consistent. Usually he works one block of shifts on one shift time but it still changes to the extreme of going from nights to evenings to days all in the same set of shifts.
I don't know a different way of life anymore.
Most days we can eat supper together.
